Sol Invictus (Latin for "Unconquered Sun") was a Roman religious festival that was celebrated on December 25th. It was associated with the deity Sol, who was the Roman god of the sun. The festival was likely a pagan observance that was adopted by the Roman Empire as a way to celebrate the winter solstice and the return of the sun after the shortest day of the year. Despite its popularity, Sol Invictus was eventually suppressed by the Christian church, which saw it as a rival religion. However, many elements of the festival were absorbed into the celebration of Christmas, and some of its traditions continue to be observed today.
