10260. Nayarit Pottery Standing Male & Female Couple

West Mexico, Ca 300 BC to 200 AD

A matching pair of hollow pottery standing male and female figures. The male is wearing a horned helmet and holding a club in front, with incised, finely crosshatched body armor. Female has a finely incised hairdo, wearing a necklace and arm bands, holding both hands to her stomach, black resist circular pattern on the female’s buttocks. Both with matching ear ornaments. Painted white highlights and details on a red-brown surface. Strong mineral deposits on both figures. Sizes: 16-1/2 inches H & 16-3/4 inches H. Provenance: Ex Sothebys, sale 6102, Nov. 1990, lot 185. Ex. Matilda Graff, Detroit.
