Good Ancient Egyptian Wood Osiris

11427. Good Ancient Egyptian Wood Osiris

Third Intermediate Period , Ca. 1100 BC.

Depicted standing in a mummiform position. Remnants of gesso, natural paint pigments and bitumen.

Size 9-1/2 inches H. + custom base; 11-1/2 inches L. with hidden insertion tang. Condition: Intact, age cracks, gesso gone leaving good crisp carved details and there are no losses to the surface of the wood. Provenance: Collection of S. Coop, Hudson MA.

As early as the Old Kingdom funerary statues formed part of the tomb equipment through to the Late Period. We are fortunate for the arid desert conditions throughout the millennium which have enabled wood pieces such as this specimen to survive.
