12437. Large Community Songye Carved Wood Power Figure

A massive and important community magical figure of imposing stature. He is carved on a rounded base, long arms at right angle to body with hands resting on hips, jutting rectangular chest, square shoulders, squat neck. The face is cubist angular with squared chin, thick lips, metal embellishments to broad nose and forehead, and large iron tack eyes with arched brows; crowned by a horn on top of the head, fetish appliqué and nails to body, Arm wear from being carried. Woven frayed fiber skirt around the hips and a few glass bead on twine necklace around the neck. A powerful and unique form.

Size 44 inches (111.7cm) Height total; (horn is 6.5 inches H) + custom mount.

Varied dry brown patina. As is condition. Wear, chips/losses.

Provenance is a Washington State Estate

Would have been carried around on poles which we have. Cp photo of one ca 1932 from Kalebwe, pg 41 African Arts Journal 43.2.
