12624. Large Faliscan Red Figure Skyphos attributed to the Fluid Group

Circa 4th century B.C.

A large and deep vessel with twin horizontal handles at rim decorated in the red figure technique and added details in white. On the obverse is a Satyr dancing to the left, white circular ornaments fill the field. On the reverse is a draped female walking to the left in a chiton (dress) with outstretched arms. Good use of added white here as well. Under each handle is a palmette frond framed by volutes.

Size: 9-3/8 inches (23.8 cm) H. 13 inches (33cm) Diam handle to handle. Cracks and repair visible behind.

Provenance: From the private collection V.B., Munich Germany, acquired from Bernd Gackstätter, Frankfurt, 2000, Ex collection of Prof. Göring before that. Included is a letter stating authenticity in German from Gackstätter.
