Mexico, Monte Alban Ca. 600 to 900 A.D.

A gray ware pottery urn depicting a seated deity, wearing a headdress having long side lappets (one side gone). Strongly modeled facial features wearing a nasal buccal mask and disc ear ornaments & pectoral.
This Zapotec urn with its unique face mask is much like a similar example illustrated in Frank Boos; The Ceramic Sculpture of Ancient Oaxaca.

Size: 7 inches H. Provenance: Private NYC Drs. collection, 1970s.
