Nigeria, early 20th Century AD.

Size 36-1/4 inches (92.2cm) H + custom mount.
Ex Brooklyn Heights TP Coll, acq, Brussels 1971 from Deletaille. Carved as a massive female with enormous pendulous bosom above an offering vessel she holds at waist level in her bent arms. Nobel proportions in high crested hairdo, strong facial features, voluminous skirt and large well delineated feet. Painted in red and black pigment. Cracks and repairs. Overall fine style. In this example it is the mother and child, representative of continuity and the central role of woman. This specific woman's high social position is indicate by her domed headdress and powerful stature. This sculptor has kept his forms massive and somewhat closed in, which furthers the authoritative effect.
