13119. New Guinea Sepik Adornment or Charm Figure

Lower Sepik River Region, Circa 19th to 20th Century AD

Carved with large head surmounted with an impressive six-tiered conical coif representing the initiated man’s headdress. The face with oval, down slanted concentric eyes, an extended pointed nose, which connects to the figures abdomen just above the penis. Hands at sides resting on strongly carved legs. Losses to base area.

8 inches H. + custom mount.

Deep blackened brown surface patina. Provenance: Ex Paul Harris Coll. Acq from Kirby Lewis in 1980s.
