13571. Sensuous Indian Granite Stone Figure of Pavarti

Late Chola to early Vijayanagar Periods, Ca 13th to 15th century AD

A well carved hard stone depiction of the Hindu goddess of fertility, love and devotion; she stands with ample bosom, her weight on right hip in a graceful curve and holding a lotus blossom. She wears a dhoti, sashes, earrings, necklace and tall elaborate headdress, fine facial features. She is also symbolic for divine strength and power. Size: 45 1/2 inches H. + custom mount.

Condition: Broken and repaired at ankles with minor mossy encrustation

Ex Collection David Swope, Westchester NY

Mr. Swope was a serious collector of Indian antiquities and traveled extensively through India, living in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the 1960s. He befriended Kalesan Natesan and his family whilst he was in the Peace Corps. This friendship and mutual adoration for Indian Art was a catalyst for Mr. Swope’s collecting.
