13643. Fine Maya Pottery Polychrome Cylinder

Late Classic Period, Ca 550 to 950 AD

Painted vase decorated with two important youthful male figures sitting cross-legged, leaning forward to present a large plate laden with offerings and wearing a thin belt and a headgear with the representation of the head of the monster Cauac. Each scene is divided by bright orange patterns and a band of repeated glyphs frames the neck of the vase. Height: (7-1/4 inches) 18.3 cm. A fine example with vibrant colors and excellent brushwork. Provenance: Christie's Paris, 12 June 2003, Sale 5057 Africa, Oceanic & Pre Columbian lot 611. Ex Orlando Fl private collector.
