13981. Gandharan Schist Stone Figural Frieze

Circa 2nd to 4th Century AD

A stupa drum panel section carved with scenes in the traditional Graeco-Buddhist style in two registers; the top with figures amid leaves and tendrils. The bottom has several sections, separated by a column. To the right are figures carrying a litter; on the left is perhaps the bath of the young Buddha with turbaned figures holding jugs above him. Size 9 inches L. x 5 inches H + custom mount. Excellent signs of authenticity and quality.
Compare A Cataolg of Gandharan Sculpture in the British Museum no. 152 for similar iconography.
