14026. Yoruba Wood Shango staff

Nigeria, early 20th Century

Possibly by the Master of the Owu Shango shrine, the central female figure is depicted kneeling, holding objects in both hands and supporting a complex double-headed axe with two slender faces on each side and two figures atop. Nice facial detailing throughout, including bulging eyes, grooved mouths, and linear scarification markings.

Size 26 inches (142.2cm) Height + custom mount.

Erosion and damage to the double axes, both front and back. Heavy damage and losses to the figures atop.
