14175. Egyptian Anhydrite Jar
Middle Kingdom, circa XXIIth Dynasty 1985 BC - 1773 BC
Squat kohl pot with rounded shoulder; the top of wide disc form lip and small tours foot. Size 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. diam. Nice patina. Extremely rare.
Condition: Rim chips to top and feet, minor discoloration with encrusted residue on the interior. Provenance: Estate of William Kelly Simpson, Ph.D, former curator of Egyptology MET NY and MFA Bostson, acquired prior to August 1979. Professor Simpson positioned Yale as one of the foremost centres for Egyptology. In 1970 he was approached by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to lead its Department of Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art. During his 17-year tenure there, Professor Simpson vastly increased the scale of the departments collection and refurbished its exhibition galleries. To students and enthusiasts, his co-authored works on the history of the ancient Near East and ancient Egyptian literature have become indispensable texts.
