14441. Kongo-Yombe Wood Power Figure

Democratic Republic of Congo. 20th century AD

Male figure carved on faceted integral base, with arms straight along sides of torso with a relief rectangular plane on front. Looking upward the solemn face bears deep inset semicircular eyes with painted pupils, open mouth with filed teeth, and relief ears with curvilinear lobes. Warm medium brown smooth patina. Possibly carved as a nkisi but never empowered with added material such as a mirror or glass for eyes. Size: 8-1/4”H. (20.9cm). + custom mount. Repaired at leg and knee.
Provenance: Estate of Susan Pines, NYC. Collected 1968-1990s.
