14452. Fine Cocle Polychrome Pottery Olla Vessel
Panama Ca. 500 to 1000 A.D. Large polychrome decorated pottery amphora, having a long cylindrical neck, flared rim, angular shoulder, and rounded base. Body is decorated on two sides with three registers each, one containing a stylized creature, and one with three stylized crabs or spiders with a central register of stylized pointed teeth. Neck is decorated with two opposing registers, each depicting a large abstract ferocious creature. Overall scattered strong mineral deposits; repaired and some restoration. Size: 14H. x 10-3/4W. Provenance: NYC collection; Ex. The Merrin Gallery, Inc. NYC., acquired mid 1990s.
