14460. Egyptian Wood Painted Sarcophagus Mask

Late Period, Ca 715 to 30 BC

Handsome carved hardwood mask originally from a sarcophagus. Painted over gesso, with a deep red-brown color; the eyes with black pupils and white sclera. The nose and mouth are voluminously renederd. The top of the head decorated with multicolor lotus buds and a striped wig.

Condition: Age wear to gesso, slight divit to nose, cracks inpainted and minor restoration else all original.

Good Size: 11 inches (28 cm) H. x 12.1/4 inches (31 cm) W. + custom wall or table mount!

Provenance: From the estate of Dr. Arnold A. Rogow NY, NY Acq 1980s. A scarce type with very nicely rendered facial features.
