14630. Jalisco Ameca Expressive Seated Mother and Child

West Mexico, Protoclassic, ca. 100 B.C. - A.D. 250

An impressive and fine sculptural and colorful effigy; she hold a small child in her lap. Overall done in deliberate proportions with smooth burnoished surfaces; wide shoulders, large breasts, her erect head and face with smooth almond shaped eyes and triangular nose. Good deposits. Overall red slip painted with cream highlights. A choice example.

Height 8 1/2 inches.

Provenance: Private Estate of Jean Claude Ferrand, Paradise Valley, Arizona. Acq: Simpson's Auctioneers and Appraisers of Antiquities, Houston, 21-23 September 1990, Lot 482.
