14651. Roman Bronze Steelyard Weight of Athena

Late Roman, circa 4th Century AD.

A strong modeled bust, she wears cloak with aegis on chest with the head of medusa. She wears a high crested Corinthian helmet with griffin and plumage. She holds her shield in close against her shoulder with her front arm securing it.
The hollow back fitting of the weight, was once filled with lead, which is now gone.

Size: 4-3/4 inches (12 cm) H + custom wood block mount.

Provenance: Acq. Adam Partridge, Cheshire English ,where it was sold as private UK collection assembled from registered dealers in the 1980s and 90s.
