14786. Attic Red Figure Owl Cup or Glaux

Hellenistic Period, from Sicily 4th to 3rd Cent BC.

Glaux or skyphos (cup) fashioned from pottery and decorated in red figure style with a wide eyed alert owl between olive branches, with one vertical and one horizontal handle: Ancient Mediterranean. The Owl was a symbol for knowledge and the City-state of Athens and historically important.

Size: 3 inches (7.8cm) Height x 6 inches Diam handle to handle.
Provenance: The Estate of M M, Texas., Acq 1970s-1980s.

Compare with a near identical example in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Cute.
