14806. Apulian Red-figured Hydria

South Italy Ca 4th Century BC

Bulbous vessel on raised disc foot with twin handles on shoulder and one behind on neck and wide flared rim. Decorated with two elegant draped standing Ladies of Fashion; one wearing a chiton and himation holding an ornate fan, the other facing her with a peplos, casket and a sash. A decorative floral band around neck and key patter as a ground line, if not all added white highlights remain.
Size 12 h × 9 w × 8 d in (30 × 23 × 20 cm). Body intact with stable crack, handle repaired, some encrustation and minor rim chip.

Provenance: Private Collection, Virginia, acq 1990s. Possibly shown at the MFA Boston based on a note found in the vase ca. 1995.
