Nepalese Relief Panel with Semi Precious Stone Inlays

15011. Nepalese Relief Panel with Semi Precious Stone Inlays

Ca. 19th century AD

Of rectangular form with filigree work surrounding the central figure of a bodhisattva.

This votive plaque would have been made for a modern domestic shrine. Breathtakingly lavish, it not only confers the enduring, multivalent mastery of Nepali craftsmanship in filigree, repoussé, stone-cutting, stone-polishing, and inlay.

Height 14 inches.

The density of precious stones in this composition speaks to the widespread practice of donating jewelry at sacred centers.
