Ghana, mid 20th Century AD

Wood, kaolin, black pigment, beads, string. Carved wood figural grouping of the Queen Mother, seated on a separately carved throne stool, nursing child. Carved of light colored wood with remains of kaolin and black paint. Reportedly contained in shrines, and serve as protective figures.
