15098. Russian Painted Wood Icon of the Virgin and Child
Ca. 18th Century AD. Rendered in a nieve flat perspective, the main figures in large scale with angular drapery folds and gilt halos behind heads. Three smaller saints flank the scene's borders. The original icon of this type was supposedly found on a fir tree by Price Vasily Yaroslavich of Kostroma in 1239. Size 13-7/8 inches x 12-1/8 inches (35.2 x 30.8 cm) Compare with a similar example in Fleischer, Jens Catalogue of Greek and Russian Icons (Copenhagen 1995) NO 54, PP 128-129.
