Zapotec Pottery Bust from an Incense Burner

15257. Zapotec Pottery Bust from an Incense Burner

From Oaxaca, Mexico, Ca. 400 AD.

Depicted here is a human bust, probably of a seated figure with an opening atop for which may have been the place for a deceased bones or the burning of incense. The figure is molded with a pleasing face and in full regalia, wearing headdress with glyph badge, heavy necklace cords and loincloth. Size 9 inches H.+ custom mount. Nose restored, ear spools abraded and losses to headdress. Still a most impressive large fragment. Ex Hyde Park MA Private Collector.
