15285. Roman Marble Relief Fragment of a Female holding a Casket

Eastern Mediterranean, ca 1st to 3rd Century AD

A carved white marble section depicting a standing female draped figure holding a large woven basket filled with fruit. She wears a deeply drilled chiton cloak. Overall encrusted mottled tan surface patina with normal general surface weathering, some high point loss to her hand, otherwise an intact section. Size: 10-1/4 inches H. x 9-3/4 inches W. + custom mounted on a hardwood base. Provenance: Private New Jersey collection, acquired mid 1980’s. Ex. Edward J. Smith collection, Weehawken, NJ., 1970’s.
