15302. Mayan Polychrome Painted Plate Depicting a Water Lilly Jaguar

Late Period, Ca 600 to 900 AD.

Wide shallow pottery ceremonial plate painted with a wayob or underworld deity, the Water Lily Jaguar. He wears a death eye collar, water lily atop his head and he holds an obsidian triton blade (for removing hearts) in his hand. He is encircled in a band of hieroglyphs around rim. Ritual kill hole in center. Size: 12 in. diameter + custom lucite stand. A nice unrestored, all original specimen. A 5 inch stress crack else intact.
