15355. Roman Pottery Erotic Oil Lamp

Circa 1st Century BC/AD.

Simple flat disc form with protruding spout and a scene of two people in coitus in the tondo, brown slip painting.

Size 3-1/2 inches (8.7cm) Length + custom mount. These pottery lamps were used through out the Roman Empire for it was primary means of lighting.

Provenance: Estate of Doris Brickner Klabin (1921-2021), feminist, social activist, pioneer, mentor and leader; with her passion for archaeology, she organized the first dig of the Jewish catacombs outside Rome (page one New York Times July 26, 1981).
