15553. Costa Rican Ceremonial Owl Mace Head

Greater Nicoya or Atlantic Watershed, Period IV Ca. 300-500 AD

Impressive andesite porphyry stone mace pierced in center for attachment to a shaft, with well modeled face with large socket holes, pointed ears and mouth.
Size 4-1/8 inches H x 4-3/4 inches L. Intact and with age wear and calcified encrustations.

Provenance: Ex collection of Stanley L. Kaufman, a Harvard educated lawyer who specialized in bringing suits on behalf of corporations' disgruntled stockholders, died in 1993 at the age of 81. He was a staff attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission before World War II, then served in the Army in Europe and rose to captain. In 1946 he became a founding partner in his law firm, Kaufman Malchman, Kaufmann & Kirby, which had branches in NYC and Los Angeles. He and his wife, Sigrun Rampoldt, were avid collectors of Pre-Columbian art throughout the 60s and early 70s, and lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
