The vessel features a wide, wheel-turned reel-shaped spool body resting on a flat, recessed disc base, surmounted by a domed shoulder and a tall, slender neck terminating in an angled, beaked spout. Flanking the neck are applied lateral projections (rotelles) molded in relief, connected to an elevated, high-swung strap handle that loops gracefully to the upper shoulder. Coated in black slip, the lower reel and shoulder preserve painted decoration in added white and yellow-ochre slip, including a band of delicate dotted hanging pendants, rosettes, and radial strokes encircling the base of the neck. Designed for controlled pouring of perfumed oils and libations, the epichysis was one of the most distinctive ceramic vessel forms of the late classical and early Hellenistic Apulian repertoire.

Condition: Stable with honest burial wear. The handle, neck, and spool body are structurally intact; there is a minor chip to the angled spout rim, general flaking/weathering to the black glaze and added pigments, scattered surface calcification, and an ancient kiln or post-excavation puncture hole to the unglazed underside base.
Dimensions: Height: 7 in.
