Working without metal tools, the lapidary slowly rotated the drill between the palms or with a bow, advancing only fractions of a millimeter at a time until the two narrow bores met cleanly in the center—any misalignment could ruin hours or days of work. The interiors of the holes on your beads still show the slight biconical profile and subtle striations characteristic of this bidirectional drilling process, a minute record of the artisan’s technique that underscores the time, skill, and prestige invested in rock crystal ornaments at Chavín. Ex. collection of Christa Lorenz, Bellport, NY., acquired in the 1960s.
