Panamanian Circa 500 to 1000 AD.

Such ornamental figurines were commonly produced by pre-Columbian artisans, who were organized into specialized guilds and created both decorative and ceremonial object.
16.6k
Size 4.5cm H.; 1-7/8 inches H.;  weight 6.1g.
XRF by Manhattan Gold & Silver Inc. elemental composition shows:
Gold (Au): 69.40%
Copper (Cu): 26.90%
Silver (Ag): 3.54%
Iron (Fe): 0.16%
This composition aligns perfectly with tumbaga, a pre-Columbian alloy primarily made of gold and copper. The proportions fall within the typical range of pre-Columbian metallurgy, where tumbaga artifacts could contain varying ratios of gold and copper. Technicallly, the gold-copper-silver ratio matches known pre-Columbian metallurgical practices. The presence of small amounts of silver is consistent with pre-Columbian tumbaga compositions.  The 16.6K gold classification and plating possibility noted in the analysis suggests this piece underwent depletion gilding, a characteristic pre-Columbian technique where the surface copper was removed to create a gold-enriched surface.

Provenance:   From the estate of Andres Illies, who inherited it from his grandfather, Ferdinand Grebien. Mr. Ferdinand Grebien was born in Austria, and arrived in Panama in 1911 to work on the construction of the canal. He founded Grebien & Martinz, a major private construction firm, (with more than 1000 employees) that went on to build many major institutions in Panama, including the Municipal Palace of the District of Colón. Grebien was an avid collector of ancient Pre Columbian gold. Shown in the listing is a photo of Ferdinand Grebien displaying part of his gold collection at the 1964 World’s fair in NY.
