AD 1000–1350 (Sapoá Period / Middle-to-Late Polychrome Period)

This is a superb polychrome zoomorphic effigy vessel from the Greater Nicoya archaeological zone of northwestern Costa Rica (Guanacaste Province). The vessel is modeled as a crouching feline — almost certainly a jaguar — with the open flared bowl issuing from the animal's back, four large splayed hollow feet, a fully modeled head with open snarling mouth and rounded ears, and a looping tail handle on the reverse. The body is elongated and supported on four large hollow pointed feet, each with a slit opening confirming the rattle construction. The tail curves up at the rear to form a loop handle. The vessel body carries dense black-on-red geometric painted designs; rows of rectangular interlocked step-fret and diamond/lozenge motifs in black paint over a burnished red slip. The rim carries concentric painted black band lines.

Size 10-1/4 in L. x 6-3/8 in height.

Provenance Private Florida Collector.
