Mexico, La Blanca, Pacific Slope Region. Middle Pre-classic period, circa 900 to 600 BC.

Greenish-black carved serpentine stone face mask depicted with a squared face having a lively expression, the lips pulled tightly apart in a gentle smile showing gums, fulcrum indicated. Faintly raised lower lids and curving oval eyes with large pierced pupils, incised lid and straight brow, the rectangular ears incised and drilled, the top of the head and lower cheeks drilled for suspension, the reverse is deeply concave.

Size: 5-1/2”H. x 4-3/4”W.
Excellent ancient surface patina with scattered areas of encrustation. Old custom lucite stand. Intact, exc. cond., Mr. Friedenberg in the 1980’s dremeled his social security on the reverse. A rare and beautiful example.
