Above, a broad upper frieze depicts stylized horizontal anthropomorphic figures or monkey impersonators reclining or swimming amidst interlocking woven mat motifs (pop), symbolizing royal lineage and rulership. The vessel’s interior walls provide a captivating, airy counterpoint to the densely banded exterior, populated by four lively, dancing monkeys rendered in fluid red slip.
