He wears a tall conical headdress and large circular ear ornaments, the animated face and exaggerated nose giving him the wonderful personality typical of the best Ixtlán del Río ceramic sculpture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFigures of this type functioned as funerary offerings, placed in the deep shaft tombs of West Mexico to accompany and honor the deceased; depicting villagers, dignitaries, and elders engaged in daily and ceremonial life, they served as enduring companions and as records of the social world of the living. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe back and side views show the characteristic hollow construction, vent openings, and richly patterned slip decoration extending across the poncho.
