roman-gold-solidus-of-honorius
Roman Gold Solidus of Honorius

(4.42 g), Sirmium mint, circa 395–402 A.D., 20 mm. Obverse: D N HONORI‑VS P F AVG, pearl‑diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Honorius right, the young western emperor shown in full military dress. Reverse: VICTOR‑IA AVGG / S‑M / COMOB, the emperor in armor standing right, left foot planted on two bound prisoners, holding a labarum (imperial battle standard) in his right hand and a Victoriola (tiny Victory) on globe in his left, a powerful image of Christianized imperial triumph used on high‑value gold payments and donatives to proclaim victory over barbarian enemies. Struck on a broad, well‑centered flan with sharp detail to both portrait and reverse scene and bright, lustrous surfaces showing only light circulation wear, this is an attractive example of the Sirmium VICTORIA AVGG solidus type.
