The face is brilliantly decorated in traditional native earth pigments: broad fields of copper blue-green frame the central facial plane, accented by deep red ochre along the nostril rims and broad lips, and heavy black eye brows sweeping across the forehead.  The eyes are inlaid with brilliant, iridescent circular abalone shell discs (paua), each pierced at the center with a drilled aperture aligning with the hollowed reverse for sight.
