Late Period, XXVIth (Saite) Dynasty, Ca. 646–525 B.C.

A finely cast solid bronze votive figure of a priest of Thoth shown striding forward with left leg advanced in the traditional Egyptian pose of purposeful motion. The figure wears a smooth belted kilt and has a shaved bald pate befitting his priestly status. The right arm is raised and surmounted by a uraeus cobra, symbol of royal and divine protection, while the left hand presents a small baboon figure held at waist level, identifying the priest as a devotee of the god Thoth, patron of wisdom, writing, and the moon.

Baboons, specifically the hamadryas species, were sacred to Thoth and among the most revered animals in ancient Egypt, imported from Nubia and kept in temple precincts where they were believed to greet the rising sun with their cries. Bronze votive figures of priests offering baboon effigies were dedicated at temples as acts of personal piety during the Late Period, when the cult of Thoth at Hermopolis and elsewhere reached its zenith.

The surface displays a handsome dark brown patina with areas of green and blue-green cuprite encrustation consistent with considerable antiquity. The figure retains its original insertion tang beneath the feet for mounting into a wooden base or shrine.

Dimensions: 2-3/8 inches H. (6 cm) + insertion tang; on custom mount

Condition: Intact and in excellent condition for its age. Rich dark brown patina with areas of green cuprite encrustation. Original insertion tang present.

Provenance: Ex Collection J.S. Acton, MA.
