      Central Africa is home to some of the most powerful, inventive, and spiritually charged artistic traditions on the continent, produced by a remarkable diversity of peoples inhabiting the vast equatorial forests, river systems, and savannas stretching from Cameroon and Gabon through the Congo Basin and beyond. The region's sculptural heritage is breathtaking in its range and intensity—from the soaring white-faced masks of the Fang and Punu and the iconic heart-shaped masks of the Kwele to the imposing reliquary guardian figures of the Fang, Kota, Mahongwe, Obamba, and Ambete peoples, created to protect the sacred bones of revered ancestors. The kingdoms and cultures of the greater Congo produced an equally extraordinary legacy, including the powerful nail-studded nkisi power figures of the Kongo and the tender, naturalistic Yombe maternity figures—among the most celebrated mother-and-child images in all of African art—the dramatic Songye kifwebe masks with their mesmerizing striated surfaces and the imposing Songye power figures bristling with magical charge, the refined Mangbetu elongated-head vessels and figural harps, the cubist-influenced masks and cups of the Kuba kingdom, the expressive Luba and Hemba ancestor figures celebrated for their serene classical beauty, the haunting Lega ivory and bone bwami society figures, the boldly abstract Teke fetish figures, the striking Biombo, Salampasu, and Pende masks, the powerful Chokwe chief's figures and mask traditions, and the rare Mbole and Lengola hanging figures of the deep forest.
