Third Intermediate Period, 21st Dynasty, Circa 1077 to 943 BCE

Each shown mummiform and striding right, pierced through the head and feet for attachment. Such amulets protected the embalmed viscera during the journey to the afterlife where sets of four were attached to the outer linen shrouds or bead nets over the abdomen.

We have the falcon-headed Qebehsenuef, guardian of the intestines; 

a jackal-headed Duamutef, protected the stomach ;

a human-headed Imsety, the guardian of the liver;

 and the baboon-headed Hapy, the protector of the lungs;

Each flat-backed plaque is decorated on the front with a manganese‑black painted lozenge “net” pattern over a blue‑green to sandy brown glaze, now worn with burial encrustation, surface pitting, and minor edge losses at the thread‑holes, originally having been sewn into the mummy bandages.

Sizes 2-3/4 inches (7cm) to 3 inches (7.6cm) Length. 

Provenance: From an old private collection in North Rhine-Westphalia Germany.
