Contemporary Northern Northwest Coast
A handsome carved wood mask representing a Bear crest figure, executed in the expressive Tlingit artistic tradition, intricately sculpted from a single block of wood, featuring prominent upright rounded ears, deep-set eye orbits, broad cheeks, and an open, pronounced snout with carved nostril flares. The face is brilliantly decorated in traditional native earth pigments: broad fields of copper blue-green frame the central facial plane, accented by deep red ochre along the nostril rims and broad lips, and heavy black eye brows sweeping across the forehead. The eyes are inlaid with brilliant, iridescent circular abalone shell discs (paua), each pierced at the center with a drilled aperture aligning with the hollowed reverse for sight. Additional circular abalone roundels are inlaid near the tips of the upright ears. Dimensions: 10.0" H x 4.5" W x 2.5" D, Unsigned.
Condition: Good overall condition with scattered light abrasions and minor paint loss consistent with handling.
