Hellenistic to early Roman, circa 2nd–1st century BCE. 

Terracotta head of a female goddess wearing a high diadem, her wavy hair massed in thick locks around the sides and back of the head and she is adorned with dangling earrings.  The facial features slightly worn, leaving a softly rounded plane framed by surviving curls, with earthen deposits and encrustation over the warm pinkish-buff surface testifying to long burial. Hellenistic in style and likely early Roman in date, reflecting Greek influence in the Levant and said to have been found near Jerusalem .

Thia terracotta votive or cult head, was originally dedicated in a household or sanctuary shrine to invoke protection or favour from the goddess.

Size: 4 1/4 in (10.8 cm) H; 5 1/4 in (13.3 cm) H on custom base.


Provenance: Private Y collection, Acquired in Israel 2000 and accompanied by a copy of older certificate from Irwin S. Driman & Co., Tel Aviv.
