South Italy, Daunia (Canosa di Puglia), circa 4th century BC.

This sizeable Daunian askos has a full, sack-like globular body rising asymmetrically to a broad flaring rim-spout on one side, balanced by a pointed tail-spout on the other, with a single arching strap handle spanning the shoulder—the characteristic asymmetric pouring form of the South Italian askos. The vessel is finished in a pale yellow-cream slip over a buff terracotta fabric, the surface enlivened by attractive earthen deposits and gentle wear consistent with its considerable age and likely funerary use.

Size 14 inches (35.5cm) high.

Produced in the workshops of Canosa di Puglia, a major Daunian pottery center in northern Apulia, askoi of this type served as functional and votive vessels and are well represented in major museum collections of South Italian ceramics.

Provenance: Rhenish private collection, acquired between the 1960s and 1990s.

Cf. the British Museum, London, no. 1850,0823.1, a globular Daunian pottery askos made at Canosa di Puglia and dated circa 350–325 BC; and the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities (University of Canterbury) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art for related Apulian and South Italian askoi of the 4th–3rd century BC.
