Egypt, Dynasty XXX, circa 380–332 BCE

A large heart scarab finely carved in a dense, dark brown hard stone, the dorsal surface with lightly indicated anatomical details (the body merely sketched in). The original hieroglyphic text on the base has been largely rubbed away, and across the lower portion a later two-line Demotic inscription was added in antiquity; several lines of the earlier hieroglyphs remain faintly legible above. This deliberate reuse—effacing an earlier funerary text and re-inscribing it in the contemporary script—reflects the long secondary life of such amulets in the Late Period.

Measurements: 6.8 x 4.7 cm (2 11/16 x 1 7/8 in.), as published.

Condition: Some edge chips, especially along the base, and a chip to the top of the scarab, as noted in the original catalog. Ancient surface losses to the dorsal right "wing" area; minor abrasions and wear overall; otherwise intact, retaining a deep, well-preserved patina.

Provenance:  William D. Ashby, California;  Acquired at Joel L. Malter & Co., The Antiquities of Ancient Egypt, Auction III, 26 February 1978, lot 25 (illustrated);  Thereafter, private Brooklyn collection

References:  Cf. A. Rowe, A Catalogue of Egyptian Scarabs, Scaraboids, Seals and Amulets in the Cairo Museum, Pl. xvi, 641 (the published parallel cited by Malter);  For the type generally, see W.M.F. Petrie, Historical Scarabs, and D. Ben-Tor, The Scarab: A Reflection of Ancient Egypt.
