Nagada II Culture, circa 3600-3300 B.C.

The Egyptian Predynastic black-topped red-ware jar is highly significant for understanding ancient Egyptian society, technology, and ritual from the Naqada II period (circa 3650–3300 BCE). These jars are among the earliest fine-ware ceramics of the Nile Valley and represent early advances in pottery-making, including their distinctive aesthetic and technical mastery using Nile clay with a hematite slip for the red body and carbonizing for the black top. Their manufacture involved sophisticated firing techniques: the red was achieved with a slip and burnishing, while the black top resulted from inverting the vessel during firing, which carbonized the rim in sawdust or ash.

Black-topped red-ware jars were developed for both domestic and funerary use; their cone-shaped bottoms allowed them to be wedged in sand, a design adaptation for the environment.

Condition: Old  chips, rim and body wear.

Size: 5.5'' x 4.5'' x 4.5'' (14 x 11 x 11 cm). Old label with faded ink on center body. The label, a small rectangular paper with a red border and faded handwriting, is typical of old museum or early collector inventories from the late 19th to early 20th century.
