Middle Corinthian Ca. 650-600 BC

A pyriform aryballos is a small, pear‑shaped oil flask used to hold perfumed olive oil, especially by Greek athletes for anointing and cleaning the body before and after exercise or bathing. The wide, flat mouth allowed the user to shake oil onto the rim and apply it with the fingers, and the handle or strap holes let it be hung from the wrist or wall peg.

Decorated in umber pigment and delicately incised and painted surface with a disk mouth and single strap handle, ovoid body tapering to a small ring foot. The shoulder is decorated with a frieze of radiating tongues, the body with closely spaced semicircular “scale” or overlapping wave motifs bordered by horizontal bands, and a further zone of vertical tongue like reserves around the lower body. 

Surface wear and with areas of misfiring, surface encrustation and minor losses, particularly around the rim and shoulder; an old paper collection label remains on the top of the mouth penned number 188. Handle repair and small hole in body.
