New Kingdom, Circa 1500 BCE

This style of meticulous, multi-material eye inlay was a hallmark of ancient Egyptian funerary and portrait statuary, designed to bring a sense of life and "presence" to the deceased or the divinities portrayed.

Ancient artists across various civilizations used inlaid eyes to give a lifelike and intense gaze to statues and other objects. This technique involved hollowing out the eye sockets and then fitting them with different materials to create the sclera (white) and pupil. The eyes are made of a white or cream-colored stone for the sclera and a polished black stone, likely obsidian or a similar dark material, for the pupils. They are also set in what looks like a greenish or dark gray stone frame, which forms the shape of the eye socket.
