Hellenistic, Boeotia, circa 3rd to 1st Century BC

The bulky torso and exaggerated pose are typical of generic comic or grotesque figures produced in many Hellenistic centers, especially in the 3rd–1st century BCE. The irregular break line through the mid torso suggests it may have been part of a larger composition or had a functional mounting distinct from standard standing terracotta statuettes.

This fragment of a bust originally had a function in ancient life: for a small Hellenistic terracotta, that could be a domestic or tomb offering, a votive in a sanctuary, a humorous or apotropaic household figurine, or part of a theatrical decorative set.

Popular workshops or production center or circle of artisans that made the terracottas like this could be found in Alexandria, Tanagra, and Myrina to name a few.
