Panama circa 500-1500 AD

A stylized frog design with distinctive characteristics: A prominent pointed head or crest Two lateral projections that likely represent limbs A flattened, geometric body structure Some losses to one flipper.

Dimension: Size  3 cm; 1-1/4 inches L.; weight  3.1g.

This Pre-Columbian gold frog pendant crafted in 17.2K gold, exhibits the sophisticated metallurgy of ancient American civilizations. The elemental analysis reveals a composition of 71.9% gold (Au), 7.05% silver (Ag), and 20.9% copper (Cu), demonstrating the advanced alloying techniques used by Pre-Columbian artisans. The deep color and high precious metal content align with the ceremonial and religious significance that frogs held in Pre-Columbian cultures, where they were often associated with water, fertility, and transformation. The possibility of plating mentioned in the analysis suggests this piece may have undergone surface enrichment, a technique known to have been used by Pre-Columbian metalworkers to enhance the golden appearance of their creations.  The size and design suggest this was likely worn as a pendant or decorative element, possibly by a person of high status within the society, as gold items were typically reserved for elite and ceremonial use in Pre-Columbian cultures.

Provenance: From the estate of Andres Illies, who inherited it from his grandfather, Ferdinand Grebien. Mr. Ferdinand Grebien was born in Austria, and arrived in Panama in 1911 to work on the construction of the canal. He founded Grebien & Martinz, a major private construction firm, (with more than 1000 employees) that went on to build many major institutions in Panama, including the Municipal Palace of the District of Colón. Grebien was an avid collector of ancient Pre Columbian gold. Shown in the listing is a photo of Ferdinand Grebien displaying part of his gold collection at the 1964 World’s fair in NY.
