Middle Cauca River Vallery, Classical Quimbaya period, Circa 500 BC to 600 AD.

A cast nude figure with hands bound behind his back. He had a horn headdress and ‘c’ shaped ears. He also has large square dangler at abdomen and a  loop hole for suspension behind

Stylistically, this figurative piece appears to be from the Quimbaya culture, which flourished in the Middle Cauca River valley region of modern-day Colombia. The stylized human figure with geometric features are distinctive characteristics that point to Quimbaya origin.

The XRF analysis shows it is made of

(Au 53.3% Cu 38.8% Ag 7.85%) which is consistent with a high gold content alloy commonly used in pre-Columbian metalwork.  The piece has been classified as 12.7K gold according to the analysis report, which aligns with the typical composition of Quimbaya ceremonial objects that were cast using the lost wax technique and were renowned for their sophisticated goldsmithing and their works often featured stylized anthropomorphic figures used in religious and ceremonial contexts.

Provenance:   From the estate of Andres Illies, who inherited it from his grandfather, Ferdinand Grebien. Mr. Ferdinand Grebien was born in Austria, and arrived in Panama in 1911 to work on the construction of the canal. He founded Grebien & Martinz, a major private construction firm, (with more than 1000 employees) that went on to build many major institutions in Panama, including the Municipal Palace of the District of Colón. Grebien was an avid collector of ancient Pre Columbian gold. Shown in the listing is a photo of Ferdinand Grebien displaying part of his gold collection at the 1964 World’s fair in NY.
